Tomorrow is the day I finally pick up the Barracuda I bought on eBay two weeks ago (thanks for posting a Barracuda picture like 5 minutes before this, Twincharged...Make Oppo Barracuda Again). Anyway, I had no idea what I wanted to do with it until about yesterday.

Kinja'd!!!

See, I love the fastback body style of the Barracuda. What I love less is skirted rear wheels. And what I love MORE is fender flares and big fat tires.

So last night, for some reason my brain made this connection:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The Kenmeri Skyline. Similarly shaped from the side, big fender flares, always fat tires. But because America, I also really like this:

Kinja'd!!!

My thought is something of a vintage stock car look, steelies with big fat tires...drop the car, round off the rear wheel wells, add tasteful but badass flares (probably more like the red Skyline than the other one). It’ll make the car look shorter, which is nice because the A-body Cudas look a little bit long and narrow. It’s also a plus because I could get an E-body 8 3/4 rear end or a Ford 8.8 out of an Explorer (good because it’ll come with disc brakes and a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern).

There’s a pretty badass car somewhere inside this rusty little pile. I’ll be interested to see how it works out.

A-body Mafia! I’m working on getting a 340, by the way...I’ll let you know how the 273 looks when I get it back here.

This should be interesting.

Also, going to leave this here for possible extra inspiration.

That...is so sexy. Basically that, but with the wider stance and flares. I'm not painting my car, except maybe doing the hood in satin black, so patina for days.

OOOOOOh don’t drop it - compromises what little handling there is ... and videos. In car videos! Let’s see what driving one is like!

Hahaha, I mean I’m not gonna drop it to the ground, but I do want the tires to fill the wheel wells.

I’m looking forward to driving it as is. I thought about doing all the engine and handling work before I ever even got it on the road, but what’s the point of doing an upgrade if you don’t have a ‘before’ for your ‘after’? Right now it’s got four wheel drums, no sway bars, and about 130hp once I get the engine unstuck. It's going to be hilarious to drive the way it is.

Is that one of the push-button transmission cars?

Nope, four on the floor. Basically the #1 reason I bought it was that it was a factory 4 speed with a factory Hurst shifter, which was apparently the standard shifter on 4 speed cars until I think ‘66 when they went with a shifter that had a reverse lockout switch...which, admittedly, looks super cool.

KnowsAboutCars posted that one, I love it. I love everything about it but the lack of flared fenders...I guess that's what will make mine fun and exciting. But his engine is exactly what I want, a 273 that revs to the moon.

Thanks. I think I’ve hit upon what will be a really cool look for the car. I’ll have to see what kind of flares are out there.

LOVE the first gen Barracudas - that rear window is a wonder of the world.

I can’t wait to see what you do with it, the early ’Cudas don't get enough love.

Agreed. It’ll look kickass :)

The problem with the old ‘cuda is that the combination of the enclosed rear wheelarches, the slightly bulky fastback and the relatively tall sides give it a lot of visual bulk at the rear end (something that’s endemic to modern cars and I hate, makes them look dumpy).

By expanding the rear wheelarch and breaking up the bulk a little with a flare in a contrasting colour (black probably) would really break up that bulk.

Genius idea :) looking forward to updates :)

Exactly. It's really stacked to the rear, and it's also very narrow looking. Making the car appear (and actually be) wider and shorter is going to do wonders for how people see the car. At that point the small block and 4 speed are just icing on the proverbial cake.
